in today’s GTFOHWTBS news….
Black women have always been known for their sense of style and trendsetting fashion trends. Often these trends are copied by the white mainstream and are re-named and re-classified to erase all traces of Blackness from the style.
But there are some styles that just cannot be stolen because they are such a global representation of Black fashion. In cases like these, the white mainstream powers at be usually re-name the trend something “urban” or “ethnic”.
Most recently Vogue Italia decided that the over-sized hoop earrings sistas have been rocking since the beginning of time are now finally hot for white women and acceptable for the rest of the world.
But instead of calling them what they are…Hoop Earrings…they labeled them as”SLAVE EARRINGS”. You read it right. Of course all HELL broke loose and the company immediately issued an apology:
“We apologize for the inconvenience. It is a matter of really bad translation from Italian into English,” editor Franca Sozzani told the U.K. Telegraph. “The Italian word, which defines those kind of earrings, should instead be translated into “ethnical style earrings.”
The word “slave” was later replaced with “ethnic” above the slideshow.
The original piece also featured an accompanying post that directly mentioned American slavery.
“If the name brings to the mind the decorative traditions of the women of color who were brought to the southern Unites States during the slave trade, the latest interpretation is pure freedom.”
But as of Monday afternoon, the accompanying article had been removed with the following message in its place.
“We’ve decided to remove the article from the site to prove our good faith and to show it wasn’t our intention to insult anyone.” Source
Word? Is that how it’s going down in the streets Vogue Italia?
The translation of ethnic is slave?? Then you say that the “modern” interpretation is freedom??? Seriously????
African women have worn hoop earrings before the first white man crawled out of a cave and learned to speak. It was a fashion that carried over from African Royalty. It never meant slave nor does it need to be “re-interpreted” into a new definition of freedom.
Vogue Italia..please…go kill yourself.
Shouts out to all the MadMen who made noise and got that shit shut down. The revolution of the mind continues.
