Michigan Governor Rick Snyder (R) has plans to enact a law that would impose a “Financial martial law” upon struggling communities.
According to the law, the governor will be able to declare “Financial Emergency” in towns or school districts and appoint someone to fire local elected officials, break contracts, seize and sell assets, break Union contracts and eliminate services. Under the law, whole cities or school districts could be eliminated without any public participation or oversight. Because that’s just what the struggling taxpayer needs, a political bully to swoop in and push everyone around.
An amendment to require “Emergency Managers” to hold monthly meetings to let people know how they are governing was rejected by Senate republicans, along with proposals to cap “Emergency Manager’s” compensation and require that those appointed to run school districts have some background in education.
So, these “Emergency Managers” can step in and dismantle entire communities without the worry or threat of being held responsible for their actions. They could demand any amount of compensation in return for the expert assistance and they do not have to claim any experience in the field in which they are appointed.
Sounds fair, right? About as fair as having a kicking contest with a man that has no legs.
